Overview

This document describes the hardware hookups for the 1000 ton LVP system. The document is divided into the following sections:

General Description

The system consists of (1) a 10 MN (1000 ton) hydraulic press, which can be positioned (in three orthogonal linear motions and one rotation) with precision of 5 mm , and 0.01° , (2) hydraulic pressure generating system for load control, (3) a solid state detector with a five-axis stand to define the diffraction geometry with an angular precision of 0.002° , (4) a set of slits and collimators to define the diffraction condition, (5) pressure generating guide blocks (DIA, T-25) used to compress the sample, with die cart to transport the guide blocks in and out of the press, (6) a 3000 W regulated AC power supply for heating which has up to five settings for various resistance heating element used in the cell, and (7) measuring devices for pressure, displacement, temperature (incl. TC emf, current, voltage, power, resistance), X-ray intensity, acoustic, etc.

 Control Flow Chart

The chart below shows the control logic of the system. The motion control is through VME crate (next to the control desk with LeBaron) which connects to the Stackpak (on roof of 13-BM-D), which then drives the specified motors. There are six motors for press positioning, five motors for the detector base, two motors for the LVP front slits, and three motors for the ccd camera. In addition, there are four motors defining the BM-D hutch slits. All of the motors and there connection are described in the next section "Motor Assignment and Cabling".

   Motor Assignment and Cabling

All motors are defined in a motors_template file (see excerpt in Appendix). The motors that are used for LVP operation are summarized below.
