Ultrasonic Equipment
Setup
Last updated June 10, 2002

Overview
The ultrasonic equipment is currently used in 13-ID-D in
conjunction with the 1000 ton LVP for acoustic measurements under high pressure
and high temperature. In principle, it
can also be used in 13-BM-D on the 250 LVP.
The set up instruction given below is based on operations in
13-ID-D.
Components
TDS5104 Oscilloscope (“Scope”)
AWG2021 Arbitrary Waveform Generator (“Waveform Generator”)
CFG253 Function Generator (Function Generator”)
All
these three components are mounted in a blue rack that is rolled inside the
hutch during ultrasonic experiment
MicroExtender for controlling
Waveform Generator outside of hutch
Additional Monitor/mouse/keyboard outside the hutch
BNC Connectors, terminators, cables
Spring-loaded connection pin
Acoustic transducers
T-25 module, Anvils and cell assembly
Connection
Connection between components
- Connect
Function generator Output (SYNC, TTL£5V)
to the Waveform generator Trigger Input (1 MW
£
10 V p-p) with a BNC cable
- Connect
Scope Channel 4 (CH 4) to the Waveform Generator CH1 SYNC (3V) with a BNC
cable (note: this is the fourth connection terminal from left)
- Connect
Scope channel 1 (CH 1) with Waveform Generator channel 1 (CH 1) with a TEE
in the middle of the connection.
Connect another BNC cable to the bottom connection pin to be
installed in the bottom guide block of T-25.
- Connect
the Network port (back of the rack) on the Scope to the “Network, IDD-AD1”
port on the DAC hutch panel, with an Ethernet cable. This allows the scope to be on the
GSECARS network so that data files can be saved/transferred over the
network
- Connect
the MicroExtender (back of the rack) to the
“Computer AD1” port on the LVP hutch panel, so that the scope can be controlled/viewed on the monitor outside the hutch.
Settings
- Function
Generat
or:
- The
button labeled “Volts Out” should be pushed in (for 0-2 V P-P)
- Frequency
dial should be set around 0.45
- Range
(Hz): select “1 K” by pushing in the corresponding button
- Waveform
Generator:
- Make
sure channel 1 (CH 1) is selected (green indicator on)
- Under
“Menu”, select “Set”
- Oscilloscope:
See user manual
Note: The rack that contains all the electronics must be
lead-shielded in the hutch during experiment to reduce the risk of radiological
damage.
Setup in T-25
- Spring-loaded
connection pin is inserted at the triple junction between the three bottom
wedges in the lower guide block.
The blue coated wire is inserted in between the front two wedges
- A 50 W
terminator is connected to a TEE, which connects the pin cable and the
input cable (from the Scope). The
TEE, resting on the containment ring of T-25, must be insulated by
insulating tape and must be securely held by additional tape.
- A
ground connection must be secured by taping the ground connector to the
bottom containment ring of T-25.
